The Occupation Museum explores life in Aarhus during the German occupation from 1940 to 1945. Through authentic artefacts, personal accounts, and engaging exhibitions, visitors gain insight into a period marked by rationing, blackouts, propaganda, and resistance efforts.
The museum highlights key events from Aarhus and the surrounding region, including the resistance movement, the bombing of the Gestapo headquarters at Aarhus University, and the 1944 harbour explosion. The exhibitions provide a deeper understanding of the difficult choices and ethical dilemmas faced by ordinary citizens during the occupation.
Housed in the former Gestapo headquarters for Jutland, the museum offers a unique historical setting. Visitors can see an original Gestapo prison cell and a wide-ranging collection of objects from the wartime period, bringing the history of occupied Aarhus vividly to life.
